Colossal Heads and puppets and things
The gif at the top of this page depicts an attraction I installed in a storefront in Little Falls, NY. The eyes are sculptural, composed mostly of packing plastic and box tape. With a backing of waxed paper they are a translucent, static —if soft— structural element.
Using rear projection, low-light cameras and web technology, the animated elements track and follow motion —of pedestrians on the sidewalk or cars driving by. Within each projected pupil, tiny reflections of the outer scene are live, realtime “as-seen-by” the eyes themselves.
Interactive, playful and only slightly alarming, I consider this toy a kind of game, played with an animated character, a puppet.
